THE BIRTH OF MEALS ON WHEELS
"The Meals on Wheels concept began in England during World War II. It was devised by a group of volunteer women to meet the needs of older person who had survived the bombings but could not get out of their shelters and whose support systems had been cut off by the misfortunes of the war. The automobiles served as the kitchen. They were full of supplies, including a small portable stove, and the meals were cooked at the client's premises on the boot of the car. This is truly a colorful beginning for a program that has spread internationally and has been meeting human needs for over 60 years.
It eventually came to the United States, starting in Philadelphia, in 1954. In 1972 an ecumenical women's group known as Church Woman United (CWU) started meals on Wheels (MOW) in the St. Louis area. It was set up and still remains an all-volunteer organization supported by donations from churches, civic and service organizations and individuals. No government funds are used.
That first year, 1972, the Kirkwood and Lemay programs were started.
